The eyes are the looking glass with which we see the world. They are also the windows to our soul. Such a sensitive organ is often taken for granted. We do not appreciate all that we see, and seldom what we experience. But once the sense is gone, we are in the darkness…literally.
The reason I chose ophthalmology was because of my mentor, Professor Akram Riaz; he was such a great teacher that I just gave up my longstanding dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon and instead became an Oculoplastic Surgeon / Squint Specialist. Now I make people’s eyes beautiful. WHY??
Eyes have always fascinated me and became interested in the physical aspects of it. When a person walks towards you and starts talking to you, eyes are the first feature on that person’s face that catches your attention; a pair of healthy looking eyes tell you a lot about that person’s personality. They reveal if that person is intelligent, humorous , if he/she is comprehending what you are saying and of course if they have the squint. If a person avoids looking at you while talking it means he/she’s lying but if they look at you while lying it means they’re evil… so run.
A lot of my day to day life revolves around this organ and I am careful not only to look but also to grasp what is being truly reflected. I plan to share interesting cases that I come across and hope they will throw light into understanding this beautiful but complex organ.
Looking forward to your thoughts too.
